The winners were presented with prizes by Fairtrade Foundation Executive Director Harriet Lamb, at the national Fairtrade Supporter Conference at Kings College London on Saturday 9 October. 400 Fairtrade campaigners from around the UK attended to share the latest Fairtrade news, hear from keynote speakers and pick up new skills to help promote Fairtrade in their local communities.

Fairtrade Fortnight is promoted by networks around the country including businesses, charities, trade unions, student groups, churches and other faith-based organisations. Thousands of people organized events all over the country to raise awareness of Fairtrade, and encourage people to swap to Fairtrade products, in keeping with the overall theme of Fairtrade Fortnight 2010: The Big Swap. Over a million swaps to Fairtrade products were registered during Fairtrade Fortnight on the ‘swapometer’ at thebigswap.org.uk, many of which took place at campaign events during the two week period.

(And the answer to the obvious question is Hartlepool.)

Our Birthday!

Well, we've been a Fairtrade Town for five years, so that seemed like a good excuse for a birthday party.

We were in the town centre (Market Cross area) for our party. There was Cake! Music! Chocolate Fountain! Politicians! People in strange costumes! Coffee!

Saturday 11th September was the day. We welcomed the mayor and Andrew Selous MP. And the cake...a big thanks to “Let Them Eat Cake” for providing us with the best looking and best tasting cake in town, which we shared with you good people. I was all for keeping it for the committee, but I got outvoted.

Anyway, it was a great party. I try to get to at least one party a year.

School interest in Fairtrade

HEATHWOOD LOWER SCHOOL has shown its commitment to fair trade by making an investment with the world’s only 100 per cent fair trade lender.

Shared Interest’s Supporter Relations Officer in the South, Leighton Buzzard-based Sally Reith, led Heathwood Lower School’s assembly about the impact fair trade has on farmers and handicraft makers in the developing world.

Heathwood Lower School has been a Fairtrade school for three years and runs a tuck shop selling Fairtrade goods to pupils at break times. They will use the profits from the shop to open a Shared Interest account and start investing in fair trade businesses in disadvantaged communities overseas.

Angela Feaviour of the Leighton Linslade Fairtrade Steering Group said: “I am really impressed to see how Heathwood are taking their commitment to fair trade forward by investing in Shared Interest.”

By pooling investor funds, Shared Interest currently lends over £30 million each year to fair trade businesses in some of the world’s poorest countries. The financial co-operative is looking to raise a further four million in investment over the coming year so that even more communities are able to access the fair trade market.

A spokesperson for Heathwood Lower School Fairtrade Council said: “Heathwood Lower is looking forward to developing the partnership with Shared Interest to further the children’s knowledge and understanding of issues faced in developing countries.”

Sally continued: “We are delighted that schools are deciding to invest in Shared Interest. It means that the pupils can watch their account grow, knowing that it is helping people forge a living in other parts of the world.”

Canal festival 2009 and 2010

We were there. And it went really well, despite the equipment not turning up. Unfortunately I can't show you the pictures for 2010 (or 2009) because we all forgot to take any!!!

We went bananas in 2009

We were part of the worldwide event! Were you there at the bandstand?

Did you see us on a bus? Did you see our displays? Go to the conference at Vandyke??

It was wet and cold...

But we still managed to run a very successful stall at Leighton Buzzard Christmas Market on Sunday 30th November 2008. We gave away Christmas cake, chocolate and coffee samples to a weather resistant public, and generally promoted Fairtrade. Santa was there, and promised to think long and hard about going Fairtrade in the elves canteen.

First for Heathwood!

Well done to the staff, PTA and students of Heathwood school, which has been officially declared Bedfordshire's first Fairtrade school. There was an official ceremony in July where they were presented with their award.

A special thanks to Mrs Oxley!!! Well done!

Canal festival- a wheely good stall

The Canal Festival was on Saturday 30th July, and there were lots of you there.

We did the Wheel of Fortune this year for a Fairtrade chocolate bar, and Banana Fishing (the stuff arrived this year). The whole point was to stress the range of FT products available for you, yes you, the general public, to buy.

The weather brought out the crowds, and despite breaking the clicker, it all seemed to go pretty well.

Here's some pictures:

What happened in Fairtrade Fortnight?

Fun and edible activities like the ASK pizza bunting party, Lou's Sextet and bunting.

ASK in Leighton Buzzard were brilliant! They held a pizza and bunting party on Saturday 26th February between 10 and 12. We decorated some bunting, learned how to make pizza..!

Click on the picture below to find out more about the bunting campaign. Thanks to all the local schools who took part.

The Grove Lock hosted a Jazz/Fashion Evening. Our final event for this year's Fairtrade Fortnight.

Members of the Steering Group took part in a “fun” pop up fashion show under the campaign heading “Show Off Your Label”. They wore clothes from Gossypium, Epona, People Tree and Steve Redgrave's G5 Maine Collection at Debenhams with Angela, Greg and the team at The Grove Lock wearing Fairtrade aprons and t-shirts to complete the picture.

The compere for the evening was Barry Wardle. Lou's Sextet played Sinatra style standards, numbers from the great Swing era, rock and roll, jump jive, Chicago blues, infectious Latin numbers and even some foot tapping mainstream jazz.

Nice!!
